How To Simplify Crafting Responsible AI Policies

In business, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) promises to enhance operational efficiencies, reduce service costs, and improve overall work life. However, this transformative technology comes with a dual nature, capable of elevating productivity and accentuating biases, sparking transparency concerns, and posing threats to privacy. Consequently, legal teams find themselves at the forefront, navigating the delicate balance of managing AI risks while maximizing its benefits.

A stark reality emerges from the 2023 Board Practices Report by the Society for Corporate Governance, revealing that merely 13% of the 97 surveyed public companies have established an AI use framework, policy, or code of conduct, underscoring a significant gap in preparedness within the corporate landscape.

Further insights from a survey conducted by employment law firm Littler Mendelson highlight that only 37% of the 399 company leaders surveyed provide policies and guidance on proper AI usage to their employees. This lack of comprehensive guidance may contribute to the challenges associated with responsible AI adoption in the workplace.

The “State of AI at Work Report” by Asana, based on a survey of over 4,500 knowledge workers in the United States and the United Kingdom, adds another layer to the narrative. It discloses that a mere 24% of companies furnish policies or guidance on AI usage at work. More alarmingly, only 17% of employees report receiving training on incorporating AI into their day-to-day tasks.

Despite these concerning statistics, uncertainty shouldn’t overshadow the imperative to address AI’s ethical and responsible use. Crafting an AI policy becomes pivotal, leveraging existing knowledge to streamline the process.
