Apple’s new AI model hints at how AI could come to the iPhone

Apple is prioritising local AI processing on its devices rather than cloud-based processing. OpenELM, a collection of four small language models, was introduced by Apple researchers, which are available via the Hugging Face model library. OpenELM is more efficient when performing text-related tasks, such as email writing, and is optimised for use on phones and laptops. Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted that generative AI features are in the works for the company’s devices, stating that Apple is investing “a tremendous amount of time and effort” in this area. Despite its numerous model releases, Apple has reportedly contacted Google and OpenAI to bring their models to Apple products.
