A law professor at the University of San Diego is investigating the potential threat of AI to the legal system. The concern is that AI could be used to create counterfeit evidence or manipulate authentic proof, leading to deepfakes entering the courtroom. However, AI can also be a helpful tool for transcribing or translating proceedings, reducing the burden on clerks and judges. Although the presence of AI in the legal system is not entirely fraudulent, lawyers have a responsibility to act ethically and be truthful and candid with the court. In 2023, President Joe Biden urged applications to incorporate an invisible watermark over their findings that a computer can later identify as AI-generated.
