AI Agents and the Law

John Nay, CEO of Norm Ai, gave a presentation about the potential for AI agents to reduce regulatory burdens in the legal profession. Nay believes that AI is a tool of efficiency and innovation for humans. The challenge in aligning AI with societal values and goals is in the specification and societal aspects. Nay outlined three possible approaches to combat the alignment problem: descriptive ethics, prescriptive ethics, and the middle ground between both solutions, which trains AI on real-world, interpretable, and normative data. Law-informed AI can benefit the legal profession’s future, offering citizens a well-rounded understanding of policies, improving laws, analysing policies, and cutting through “legal sludge.”
