Year in review: Artificial Intelligence Law in France

France is prioritizing the growth of its AI industry. It has adopted the National AI Strategy to become a leader in AI innovation by 2030, characterized by the predominance of public entities and the development of AI systems in the health and medical sciences, transportation, and security sectors. The most notable trend of France’s AI industry in the past year has been the proliferation of accessible generative AI systems, which has led to intense policy, regulatory, and social debates. France has also actively promoted the development of open-source AI. The CNIL has been actively formulating policy documents on the legal and ethical considerations implicit in the use of AI, including privacy and data protection, and has published a set of practical guidelines dedicated to the development phase of AI. Additionally, in July 2023, the CNIL launched a regulatory sandbox dedicated to AI projects.
