What’s next for AI regulation in 2024?

In 2023, AI policies and regulations became a hot topic. In 2024, the U.S. will enact policies, and the AI Safety Institute will execute most of the policies called for in the executive order. Several legislative proposals are already in play that touch on various aspects of AI. The US approach will grade types and uses of AI by how much risk they pose. The European Union agreed on the AI Act, the world’s first sweeping AI law. The AI Act will kick in fairly quickly after official approval, requiring companies to be more transparent about developing their models. It will make them more accountable for any harm that results. Companies developing foundation models must comply with the law within one year of the time it enters into force. The most potent AI models could pose a “systemic” risk to citizens and thus need additional work to meet EU standards.
