What do employees really want out of generative AI?

Organisations are increasingly using generative AI (gen AI) to enhance productivity levels in the workplace. However, employees who frequently use gen AI and identify themselves as creators seek more than just technical skills – they seek social-emotional skills, meaningful work, and a supportive work environment, according to a recent survey. To retain highly skilled employees, organisations can humanise gen-AI-fueled productivity gains by reimagining jobs, redefining workplace flexibility, and actively listening to their employees. McKinsey’s Aaron de Smet, Bryan Hancock, and their coauthors suggest that bridging this gap between employees and organisations is critical to achieving organisational innovation and gen AI efficiencies.
