The fears and anxieties that come with the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) requires leaders to embrace a beginner’s mindset to navigate the changes. The “beginner” mindset entails approaching everything with curiosity and a desire to learn, without allowing past experiences or pre-existing beliefs to color how one approaches a new situation. Cognitive flexibility, which refers to our ability to adapt flexibly to our constantly changing environment, is essential for embracing the new environment with curiosity and flexibility. Unfortunately, expertise can hinder cognitive flexibility, and misperception can prevent leaders from adopting a beginner’s mindset. Leaders must overcome their fears and ego and work on being open, curious leaders to help their employees navigate significant changes, including the impact of AI on their jobs.
