The emergence of a new language, AI-ese, is being observed as a result of AI-generated responses possessing a distinctive artificial quality. Some of the indications of AI-generated responses are easy to identify, such as excessive politeness and eagerness to please. Other signs are not so apparent, like peculiarities, perfect spelling and grammar, and the use of uncommon words. To transform a language model into a chatbot, an additional step called reinforcement learning with human feedback is required, which is expensive. The large AI companies outsource this work to low-wage regions. AI systems that write slightly like African English are a result of workers training their systems using the same language. If AI-ese sounds like African English, then African English sounds like AI-ese.
