On to the next? European Commission launches consultation on competition in virtual worlds and GenAI

The European Commission has launched a call for information into artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual worlds, due to the fact that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) becomes mandatory on 6 March. The EC is considering how competition might evolve in more nascent technologies in this new consultation, looking towards the future. The EC is using the term “virtual worlds” to describe persistent and immersive environments based on technologies like 3D and extended reality, blending physical and digital worlds in real-time. The EC wants to engage in a forward-looking analysis of these markets, thinking about how competitive dynamics may develop and how competition rules and their enforcement might need to adjust to that. The antitrust foreground companies engaged in these sectors will be brought into focus.
