In the ongoing buzz surrounding Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), some experts predict AGI will arrive within three to five years. Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Meta, is a notable sceptic. He argues that current AI systems lack the essential characteristics of human intelligence, such as reasoning, planning, persistent memory, and understanding the physical world. To overcome these limitations, LeCun proposes an alternative architecture called “objective-driven AI,” which involves building systems to fulfil specific goals set by humans. By learning through experience, machines can plan the steps to complete various tasks and eventually surpass human intelligence. However, LeCun notes that achieving human-level AI will take some time and that current large language models (LLMs) are insufficient for the task.
