Lawyers voice opposition to 5th Circuit’s proposed AI rule

Several lawyers from major law firms have expressed opposition to a proposed rule by a federal appeals court that aims to regulate the use of artificial intelligence by lawyers appearing before it. The lawyers stated that there are already enough regulations in place to address any problems that may arise from the use of AI technology. The proposed rule would require lawyers to certify that any AI program used to generate a filing was reviewed for accuracy in regards to citations and legal analysis. Lawyers who breach this rule risk sanctions and having their filings stricken. Other federal appeals courts are also considering how to address the rapid emergence of AI programs.
