In-house legal teams start to see AI gains

The consumer goods group Unilever has established legal delivery centres in Barcelona, Mexico City, and Bengaluru to handle large volumes of legal contracts. These centres utilise generative artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to improve efficiency and handle complex legal documents.

Unilever’s legal team has invested heavily in AI tools such as Microsoft’s Copilot and CoCounsel to handle more work in-house, faster, and cheaply. As more legal teams implement AI tools, they can become more selective about the work they send to external law firms, potentially changing the economics of the corporate legal industry. Other companies, such as chipmaking equipment provider ASML, also leverage AI to reduce the cost of using outside lawyers and expect changes in how law firms work with them.
