Husic shuns EU path for AI, unveils government’s vision

The Australian government has announced regulating high-risk AI applications following an inquiry into safe and responsible AI. The government’s response includes the creation of an expert advisory committee and voluntary labels and watermarking of AI-generated content. Rather than creating a stand-alone AI bill, the government will enhance existing laws and create new legislation to regulate the use of AI in high-risk settings such as law enforcement, job recruitment, and healthcare. Industry experts have welcomed the government’s decision, stating that a risk-based and proportionate approach to AI regulation is the right path for Australia to take. However, the low public trust in technology remains a concern that is holding back business and public adoption.
