The United Nations Assembly adopted a resolution for regulating AI supported by over 120 Member States. The resolution emphasised the importance of respecting, protecting, and promoting human rights in all aspects of AI and recognised the potential of AI in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
The Assembly urged stakeholders to develop regulatory and governance frameworks for the safe and trustworthy use of AI while refraining from using AI systems that violate human rights or pose undue risks. The resolution also highlighted the need to protect human rights online and offline and called for cooperation among Member States to close the digital divide.
The US Ambassador to the UN introduced the draft resolution and emphasised the need to govern AI technology with humanity and dignity, safety and security, human rights, and fundamental freedoms in mind.
