A startup called Cognition AI has developed an AI program called Devin, which can perform work done by software engineers. Devin’s creators call it an “AI software developer,” which can generate code, plan how to solve a problem, and test and implement it. The emergence of AI agents that can take action to solve a problem is a trend that has been observed for a while. Google DeepMind has developed an SIMA agent that can play video games, including complicated tasks such as chopping down a tree or shooting an asteroid. The agent can do many of these actions successfully, even in an unfamiliar game. Google hopes that these agents will eventually go to work outside of video games, perhaps helping use the web on a user’s behalf or operate software for them.
