Disney and Universal have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the AI company Midjourney, claiming it has used their characters without permission and created numerous unauthorized copies. The lawsuit highlights well-known characters like Darth Vader, Elsa, and the Minions and contends that Midjourney has trained its image generator using the studios’ copyrighted works. Disney emphasizes the importance of copyright law for creativity and investment, stating that “piracy is piracy” regardless of the source. The studios attempted to address their concerns with Midjourney before filing the suit, but their requests were ignored. Midjourney, described as a small team with significant revenue, is now facing potential monetary damages and an injunction against unauthorized use of copyrighted works. This lawsuit is the first significant legal conflict between major Hollywood studios and an AI firm.
