B.C. lawyer who used fake, AI-generated cases faces law society probe, possible costs

A lawyer from British Columbia, Chong Ke, is under investigation by the Law Society of B.C. for allegedly submitting fake case law generated by an AI chatbot. Ke had used ChatGPT to prepare legal briefs in a family law case at B.C. Supreme Court and submitted two cases that did not exist. The opposing side’s lawyers discovered this and are now suing Ke for special costs over the incident. The Chief Justice of the B.C. Supreme Court has issued a directive telling judges not to use AI.
