The Three Principles of Responsible AI Development, and Other Takeaways from the Everlaw Summit

At the Everlaw Summit held in San Francisco, founder and CEO AJ Shankar announced the launch of three new generative AI features collectively named Everlaw AI Assistant: Review Assistant, Coding Suggestions, and Writing Assistant. Shankar highlighted three fundamental principles that steer Everlaw’s AI development: privacy and security, control, and confidence.

1. Privacy and Security: Everlaw guarantees strict data retention protocols for large language model providers, forbidding them from saving user data after providing query responses or utilising it for training.

2. Control: Users retain control over their data and the use of AI tools through features that allow them to control visibility, access, and organisational settings.

3. Confidence: Shankar emphasised that while generative AI can potentially deliver substantial benefits, it can also err. Everlaw prioritises leveraging AI’s capabilities within established workflows to ensure accuracy and dependability, helping users bypass the need for intricate, prompt engineering. He also mentioned that customers should adjust their mental frameworks when using AI tools.
