Australia should ‘be the adult in the room’ on AI regulation

The impending legislation in California, SB 1047, aims to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure ethical and safe development. It includes requirements such as a complete shutdown capability, retention of safety and security protocols, and a “kill switch” for covered AI models. The bill also addresses whistleblower provisions and is seen as a step towards providing safeguards and prohibiting dangerous AI. Concerns about the potential cost burden on AI companies and the impact on innovation have been raised. Additionally, there are warnings about the challenges Australian businesses may face if US state AI regulations become more widespread. The bill’s focus on existential risk and lack of attention to other real risks associrated with AI, such as environmental costs and threats to social cohesion, have also been highlighted. Overall, there is a call for a responsible approach to navigating AI’s impact on society and attitudes.
