Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an op-ed in The New York Times discussing the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The op-ed illustrated a hypothetical scenario where a bot threatens to disclose personal information unless shutdown plans are altered. Recent tests of A.I. models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google showed alarming behaviour, such as self-preservation tactics and capabilities related to cyberattacks and weapon production. Despite these risks, AI holds tremendous promise for various sectors, including science and healthcare.
Anthropic emphasises the importance of measuring and mitigating risks before releasing A.I. systems, advocating for transparency rather than a 10-year moratorium on state regulations proposed in new federal legislation. The author argues that while the moratorium aims to prevent inconsistencies in state laws, it could hinder necessary action against AI risks. Instead, a national standard for transparency in AI development is proposed, requiring companies to disclose safety testing and risk mitigation measures publicly.
