CanLII sues AI legal assistant Caseway AI for copyright infringement

The Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII) has filed a lawsuit against Caseway AI, alleging that the company illegally accessed and used its legal content without authorisation. CanLII claims that Causeway, founded by Alistair Vigier, breached its terms of service and violated copyright laws by systematically downloading its materials. Despite the lawsuit, Vigier reports increased interest and subscriptions for Caseway, suggesting that the legal action has presented an opportunity for growth. CanLII contends that the defendants have reproduced its content, while Vigier argues that court documents are public records and asserts that Caseway uses original court decisions. Colin Lachance, a legal consultant, notes the complexity of copyright in this context and suggests that CanLII could benefit from providing access to bulk data for legal innovation.
