Despite this, AI tools can enhance lawyers’ efficiency and impact traditional billing practices, though they are unlikely to replace lawyers entirely without major technological breakthroughs.
Case Western Reserve University School of Law is pioneering by requiring first-year law students to obtain certification in legal AI through an “Introduction to AI and the Law” program. This initiative acknowledges the necessity for new lawyers to understand and use AI tools, similar to past requirements for proficiency in legal research systems. The course will also address AI regulation and ethical considerations, potentially serving as a model for other law schools in the future.
