OpenAI’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT, is suspected of violating European Union privacy laws, according to the Italian data protection authority. OpenAI has been notified of the draft findings and given 30 days to respond. If confirmed, the breaches can result in fines of up to €20 million. OpenAI believes it complies with GDPR and other privacy laws, but the Italian authority raised concerns about its compliance with the bloc’s General Data Protection Regulation. The legal basis OpenAI claims for processing personal data to train its AI models is a particularly crux issue because ChatGPT was developed with masses of data scraped off the public Internet, including the personal data of individuals.
